Wealth Advisory

Simon Baker is the founder of Baker Avenue Asset Management and chairman of the investment committee. He oversees the investment process and leads the development of Baker Avenue’s strategies and services. Simon is also president and partner of Great Gable Partners, Baker Avenue’s alternative investment manager.

Before launching Baker Avenue in 2004, Simon was a managing director at Banc of America Securities, where he was responsible for managing wealth and risk with the private bank’s high-net-worth clients and family offices. Prior to that, he served as a director first at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ), then at Credit Suisse First Boston. It was during his tenure at DLJ that he co-developed Baker Avenue’s All Cap Core investment strategy. Simon began his wealth management career at Morgan Stanley in San Francisco in 1994.

Simon graduated cum laude with a B.A. in economics from Hartwick College.

On the personal side:

Simon is a native of Nottingham, England who originally came to the U.S. on a Division 1 soccer scholarship. His mother thought it would be a quick 4 years across the pond and then he’d return home. That was 20 years ago and she’s still waiting.

Simon still plays soccer on the weekends and recently learned how to kite surf. He sits on the board of the California Shakespeare Theater, as well as the advisory boards of Girls Incorporated of Alameda County and the Achieve Program. Through Achieve, Baker Avenue gives full 4-year high school scholarships to 2 Oakland students from low-income families. Simon lives in San Francisco with his wife, Allese, and his English Sheep dog, Mr. Riley.

Something you may not know about Simon:

While in college, Simon had a summer job in London covering Wimbledon for HBO. There was a lot of rain during the tournament that year, so HBO had to find ways to kill time on the live feed. During one rain delay, Simon performed a skit with Cris Collinsworth in which he challenged the famed sportscaster to a “slide off” down a muddy embankment. Cris accepted the challenge and jumped. Simon, the instigator, didn’t. His only response: “Those crazy Americans.”

Jerry also led a project to fund and build a computer lab for Old First Reach, an afterschool mentoring program for inner-city youth.

Something you may not know about Jerry:

Jerry originally wanted to be an architect. He decided to attend the University of Texas at Arlington because of its strong architecture program, but soon after beginning his studies he realized that his true calling was finance. He quickly transferred to the school of business and the rest is history. But Jerry still finds ways to indulge his passion for architecture and design, including a number of interior and landscape design projects at his own residence. More recently, Jerry has been experimenting with spot and arc welding. After mastering a few more techniques, he plans to weld a metal sculpture for the garden—assuming he gets his wife Alison's approval.

In a small twist of fate, Brent met his wife, Mary, while hanging out with CEO Simon Baker. After some encouragement from Simon, Brent got up the nerve to talk to her. They’ve been together ever since. They welcomed their son, Moses, into the family in August 2008. When he’s not working, Brent enjoys golf, traveling, history, and reading. He’s also a big Cornhuskers football and Jayhawks basketball fan.

Something you may not know about Brent:

He started his trek in the French Pyrenees mountains, just across the border from Pamplona, Spain. After walking 20 miles a day for 26 days, he arrived at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. Brent says the whole experience is beautiful in its simplicity: "All you do is get up in the morning and start walking." While he learned a lot on the trip, the one area where he truly became an expert was on blisters. He hopes to put this expertise to good use someday on a repeat of the trip with his son, Moses.

I am most happy when I’m outside.”

Something you may not know about Mike:

Ever since he was a kid, Mike has always wanted a motorcycle. But first his mom told him “no” and later his wife piled on the bandwagon. But Mike’s childhood dream finally came true when, on his 40th birthday, his wife gifted him with a shiny new motorcycle—and motorcycle safety class lessons. He has no idea what changed her mind.
